POSSIBLE LEED RECERTIFICATON SCENARIOS
Project teams considering recertification under the LEED-EB rating system typically fall into one of the three scenarios laid out below. This fact sheet provides information about the typical timeline for recertification under each scenario, the amount of data required for submittal, and the frequency with which important audits and surveys need to be conducted. Whatever your situation, The Compass Group can provide the information and insight needed to make LEED recertification as smooth as possible.
Scenario 1
- Project is able to use previous surveys (surveys conducted within previous 2 or 5 years)
- Performance data is available
- Project may pursue new credits that do not require a performance period
- Timeline (3 to 4.5 months)
- Application development (1 to 2 months)
- Preliminary review (1 month)
- Response (0.5 month)
- Final review (0.5 to 1 month)
- Certification
Scenario 2
- Project able to use previous surveys (surveys conducted within previous 2 or 5 years)
- Performance data is available
- Pursuing new credit(s) that require ongoing performance data
- Timeline (5.5 to 8 months)
- Performance period preparations (0 to 1 month)
- New credit performance period (3 months)
- Application development (0.5 to 1.5 month)
- Preliminary review (1 month)
- Response (0.5 month)
- Final review (0.5 to 1 month)
- Certification
Scenario 3
- Project must redo some or all surveys
- Project must collect performance data (for previously attempted credits and any new credits)
- Timeline (6.5 to 21 months)
- Performance period preparations (1 to 2 months)
- Performance period (3 to 15* months) – dependent on how much performance data is required
- Application development (0.5 to 1.5 month)
- Preliminary review (1 month)
- Response (0.5 month)
- Final review (0.5 to 1 month)
- Certification

The above scenarios were developed as a high-level representation of three common scenarios facing buildings seeking LEED-EB recertification. These were developed based on The Compass Group’s understanding of and experience with LEED-EB recertification. The tables were created by The Compass Group based on information in the USGBC’s LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Recertification Guide published in April 2013.
